Burns supper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Burns Supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of the version of the Scots song Auld Lang Syne, which is generally sung at Hogmanay and other New Year celebrations around the English-speaking world. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet’s birthday, January 25, sometimes known as Burns Night, although they may in principle be held at any time of the year.
Burns suppers are most common in Scotland (and also in Russia, where nationally televised Burns nights are held in the Kremlin) but they occur wherever there are Burns clubs, expatriate Scots, or indeed lovers of Burns’ poetry.
This is exactly what we need more of. Someone who devoted part of their lives to the furtherment of merry-making should be celebrated.
So if you see fit and have the time, why don’t we all try to arrange an impromptu get together with a few close friends and celebrate the fine art of celebration. Because when it really comes down to it, who needs the excuse to have fun anyway? Finite Jester told me that he would be happy to take on the responsibility of addressing the haggis at ours.
Be it huge dinner feast or merely a few cocktails with a buddy, let us all make merry and enjoy.
And remember that singing the song is half the point.
Auld Lang Syne:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne ?CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup !
And surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.CHORUS
And there’s a hand my trusty fiere !
And gies a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie waught,
for auld lang syne.CHORUS
