Indigestible objects

I threw myself off a mountain
Aiming at the sky
And hit what I was after
Like that, learned how to fly

I ran down that mountain
Without earth beneath my feet
Feelings torn out of reality
Not one of the sheep

Bring me back that heartfelt lover
Bring back the tattered shore
I’ll trade my wine for water
If that’s what you’re looking for

too much passion

Monday, October 1st, 2007

i’ve too much passion
or not enough
depending on the situation
and how embarrassed i can be made

sometimes hollow
at others overflowing
my soul is in a state
and i’m not sure why

passion is such a two edged blade
giving so
and taking much
overpowering, yet subtle

a glance can set me off
and bring on a burning fire
or a wish to maim
a fall into a blissful narcotic cloud of want

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

the following is an actual snippet of
foolishness that i sent to a friend of mine
whilst the evening past, a friend who
was not actually there of course,
because whom better to foist such
things upon?

jester:
still up?
art thou as drunk as i?
ooop
light go orange
the drunk typist is left hanging again
hmm….
this set of brilliance will probably be hanging around for posterity in the morning
oh shit
better stop now

Smart stuff

Impressive to see big box industry getting its head on straight.

If you walk into a Best Buy store this summer and see a tanned, rested sales-clerk clocking in or out of his shift on a whim, congratulations. You may have stumbled on a radical experiment: letting store employees work when they want.

You may also be looking at the future of your workforce, if Best Buy (Charts) has its way.

carpe diem dammit

Friday, January 5th, 2007

so there you are, living your life . . .
doing that which is expected of you as a human
(un)fortunate enough to be born here, now
just in time to witness history
as it passes on by

and all of a sudden, an invitation emerges,
out of the clouds of confusion;
a message arrives

the phrase - bat’s chance in hell
rings a bell
but still, there it is, just waiting for you
the clarion call of opportunity

the bears in spain enjoy the unseasonable rain

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

Bears have stopped hibernating in the mountains of northern Spain, scientists revealed yesterday, in what may be one of the strongest signals yet of how much climate change is affecting the natural world.

In a December in which bumblebees, butterflies and even swallows have been on the wing in Britain, European brown bears have been lumbering through the forests of Spain’s Cantabrian mountains, when normally they would already be in their long, annual sleep.

People with generally positive outlooks show greater resistance to developing colds than do individuals who rarely revel in upbeat feelings, a new investigation finds.

Frequently basking in positive emotions defends against colds regardless of how often one experiences negative emotions, say psychologist Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and his colleagues. They suspect that positive emotions stimulate symptom-fighting substances.

’tis the season

Each year, as Christmas looms ever nearer I find myself slipping further into my Scrooge persona; my biggest problem with the holiday is the profusion of things that light up and sing. Rampant commercialism of any sort gives me the fear, and every year it seems like the true meaning of Christmas gets further and further obscured in the mess of disposable commodities emblazoned with holiday characters.

Solar energy efficiency goes up

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

Great news for solar tech dudes. 40% efficiency is a great rate.

New Solar Cell Breaks the “40 Percent Efficient” Sunlight-to-Electricity Barrier

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner today announced that with DOE funding, a concentrator solar cell produced by Boeing-Spectrolab has recently achieved a world-record conversion efficiency of 40.7 percent, establishing a new milestone in sunlight-to-electricity performance. This breakthrough may lead to systems with an installation cost of only $3 per watt, producing electricity at a cost of 8-10 cents per kilowatt/hour, making solar electricity a more cost-competitive and integral part of our nation’s energy mix.

Happy Repeal Day!!

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

On December 5th 1933, prohibition was repealed here in the states and once again american drinkers could quaff their favorite hooch without fear of legal repercussions. Freedom is a good thing, and I suggest that we all celebrate in the matter best befitting the holiday.

Me, I’m planning to be found crawling across my floor, screaming strange incantations at the ceiling fan before midnight falls. Enjoy!!

satisfaction

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

there is something (at least to me)
deeply satisfying about emptying a pen,

they’re such transient objects,
it can be hard to hold onto one
long enough to drain every
word, correction and doodle
out of it

i just finished a pen
in the process of brainstorming,
and spared a moment to think
of all those things
(most of which will go
forever unremembered)
that it created before
its timely end

War on Drugs Expands to Catnip

Monday, December 4th, 2006
Drug warriors scored a virtual victory after the 2006 U.S. elections when they hurriedly extended the War on Drugs to a psychoactive substance previously exempt: nepetalactone, the main psychoactive ingredient in catnip. It is well known that the sniffing of catnip makes some cats “turn on.” Their eyes open wide, they roll over on the floor, they hug and bite the catnip toy and kick it with the feet, and they friskily run to and fro, similar to human beings who go crazy ingesting psychoactive drugs.

While catnip does not have the same effect on human beings, the advocates of banning catnip have pointed out that children who give their cats catnip and then see the cat being “happy” might get dangerous ideas about getting high. They think, if the cat can feel good, why not them too? Indeed, the first step to marijuana addiction may well be catnip! According to the drug warriors, catnip has been a major gateway to the human abuse of drugs, and yet there has been no prohibition.

Hmmm. should we lower our standards?

A record 7 million people — or one in every 32 American adults — were behind bars, on probation or on parole by the end of last year, according to the Justice Department.

Of those, 2,193,798 were in prison or jail, an increase of 2.7 percent over the previous year.

Do we live in a land full of criminals? Seems like we might. The drug war is a losing battle and I know that it would account for a large majority of these numbers.

Can we please keep this ball rolling?

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Frustrated by Bush administration inaction on global warming, states and environmentalists urged the Supreme Court Wednesday to declare greenhouse gases to be air pollutants that the government must regulate.

For me, the global warming issue is a perfect example of the blinders that we as humans (and especially us americans) have managed to strap over our eyes. Scientists have been making noise about this issue for a long time now, but it’s primarily a future peril, it’s a slippery little issue that is fairly easy to tuck out of sight and mind because the consequences are not readily apparent.

Review: Chronicles: Volume One - Bob Dylan

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006
Chronicles: Volume One (Chronicles)
Title: Chronicles: Volume One (Chronicles)
Author: Bob Dylan
LC Rating: Rating: 4

It’s a nice thing, every once in awhile, to be reminded that no matter how tuned in you think you are, that there’s a whole lot of interesting stuff going on outside your notice. That’s my way of excusing myself for not realizing that Bob Dylan was in the process of writing a three-volume set of memoirs. Chronicles: Volume One actually came out in 2004; I heard about it on Sunday, picked it up yesterday and finished reading it this afternoon.

hahaha the capitali$t$ have won

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Ok, i concede. They have won. Now what are they going to do with it now that they have it? Fix it or break it? I will affect a Jester’s pose and giggle as i watch.

Financial insecurity is one of the staples of American life, and fuel for our nation’s politics as well as cable TV shows. Once the elderly worried endlessly about money matters, athough now people over 65 count as the wealthiest group of Americans. Rather, today the biggest worriers about what’s euphemistically called our “financial future” are the young, and especially people under 25 years old.
