Dear Family Members that I invited here on the occasion of my Thirtieth Birthday, and all those weird internet-using-people that have wandered in for whatever reasons y’all came here, I offer this in the sincere hope that y’all will share the following news with whoever you feel will honestly appreciate the following . . .

I’ve come to a resolution on this, the occasion of, the rapid approach of my Thirtieth Birthday.

Said resolution being namely that . . .

Just heard the news today, Pink Floyd’s original front man, Syd Barrett, has died.

From what I know of the man; a couple of books, the great beast of rumor and factoids that are traded around by those who love Floyd, and of course, the music he created, both with Floyd and on his own, Syd was a true freak, a creature perhaps too weird for this world, or perhaps the world was too weird for him. He took chances; he pushed the edge, and almost certainly took too much acid. I’m sitting here listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and as always, the innovation and brilliance of the songwriting is easily apparent.

There is something inside that i have always recognized
but have been frightened to admit
a part of me that i am scared of
and wish wasn’t there

i think all of us have this little man
this devil on our shoulder
but mine actually showed himself to me
in a photo

i lost sleep after finding him
and my dreams were unsettled
i was worried that he was trying to get out
or at least come to the surface

Windows are what we use
to look out at the world
from our place of protection

we put up these walls to keep out the cold
or keep the cold in
but we can not tolerate
confining our sight

what comes through these windows
what insights do we get by looking out

i will curl up in the light
and sleep peacefully today
stretch out and enjoy the sunbeams
